Case Study: Alex
Alex is a 4th-grade student with dyslexia, a specific learning disability that affects his ability to read accurately and fluently. Despite receiving support from a special education teacher, Alex’s performance in reading and other subjects is below grade level. He struggles with decoding words, reading fluency, and comprehension, which impacts his performance in all subject areas. Alex often becomes frustrated and lacks confidence in his academic abilities.
In reading, Alex has difficulty recognizing sight words and decoding unfamiliar words. He often skips or substitutes words while reading, which affects his comprehension. Alex’s writing is also impacted by his dyslexia, as he struggles with spelling and organizing his thoughts cohesively. In other subjects, such as math and science, Alex’s reading difficulties hinder his ability to understand word problems and informational texts.
Despite these challenges, Alex is a creative and imaginative student who enjoys hands-on activities and visual learning. He responds well to individualized instruction and benefits from explicit, systematic phonics instruction. Alex’s family is supportive and actively involved in his education, but they also express concern about his progress and are eager to help him succeed.
