Key Assessment of Engagement, Intervention, and Evaluation of Practice with Individuals

Instructions 

This assignment will allow students to integrate and discuss concepts that have been covered in class.  Students will demonstrate competencies of working with diverse groups, engagement, assessment, theory, intervention and evaluation.  To accomplish this, students will use a case they are working with at their current internship field placement.  If the student is not currently attending an internship, the student may use a client at their current place of employment if their place of employment is social work related. The professor will provide case vignettes for students if needed. With approval from the professor, students may also choose a film or TV show character as the “client” for this assignment. 

The paper should be in APA format including a title page and references (abstract is NOT needed for this paper). Please utilize Chapters 4-6 in the Glicken text as a resource to support you in your writing (Ch 4: Using the Correct Word, Ch 5: APA Crib Sheet, and Ch 6: Plagiarism, Proper Credit to Original Sources, Falsifying Data, and the Role of Human Subjects Protection) 

  

Outline/structure of paper should be as follows: 

Case Summary – summarize the information that is gathered at intake, provide a clinical formulation of the case and discuss clinical impressions of the case. This may include noting the client/their family’s understanding of the problem, strengths, willingness to participate in services, and other identifying information. Be sure to address how diversity (think beyond just race or ethnicity and include any dynamics of oppression, poverty, marginalization, or privilege) has impacted the client’s life experiences and presenting problem.  (Competency 2)  

Engagement – Discuss methods to build rapport with this client. How did you demonstrate to this client that you value human relationships? As a follow up to the Interpretive Summary, address any barriers to change that are present. Using your knowledge about human development theories from HBSE, speculate about why these barriers might exist. Given the information provided thus far, what strategy would you use to engage this individual? What other professionals would be helpful in this case, and why? (Competency 6) 

Assessment – Using the guidelines for assessment as identified in the text, address the following components as they apply to your client: 

Needs: What does the client see as their primary concerns or goals? What are the specific indications of the problem, how does the problem manifest itself, and what are the consequences? How severe is the problem, and how does it affect the client? What is the frequency and duration of the identified concern/problem?  

Strengths: How has the client been coping with the presenting problem? What resources or supports has the client been using? What qualities does the client have that has enabled them to keep going in the face of such difficulty and stress? 

Additionally, discuss why assessment must be an ongoing part of treatment/services for this client. Be sure to include a reflection on the impact of development on this client’s assessment.  

As you assess the client’s strengths and needs, reflect on how your personal feelings or experiences may relate to your conclusions. How did you, or how will you continue to manage the potential impact of your own personal feelings and experiences on your professional judgement? (competency 7)  

Intervention – Reflecting on the needs identified in the Assessment, write one SMART goal for at least two of the needs identified (two goals in total). After each goal, identify a change strategy/intervention that they would utilize to help reach the goal. After selecting an evidenced based change strategy/intervention from this course, support the rationale for choosing this intervention.  Be sure to describe a.) how specific concepts from the theory apply to the case, and b.) what specific therapeutic techniques/interventions they would utilize while working with this individual, and why. (Competency 8) 

Evaluation – Using each goal identified above, students will explain how progress will be measured. Be sure to describe what progress looks like for the individual participating in that specific intervention. Indicate when/how often progress will be measured. Describe both a qualitative and quantitative way to measure progress for each goal. (Examples of methods to evaluate would include pre-test/post-test questionnaires, behavioral observation, client self-report, reports from other professionals, parent-teaching rating scales, single case design etc.). Finally, address how information from the evaluation process could be used to improve practice, including a multidisciplinary team approach. (Competency 9)   

Each section above should be approximately 2-3 pages in length. At minimum, the textbook should be cited/referenced throughout. Students may incorporate other resources into the paper as well.
