The goal of this assignment is to discuss the article I have chosen and use Marx’s theoretical framework to interpret a contemporary socio-economic issue. Through research, summary, and analysis of several texts, you will evaluate the article through the framework laid out in Capital, Volume I. (GELO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
Write a 1000 word theoretical analysis essay based on the instructions below.
This essay should follow MLA formatting guidelines, and include in-text citations and a Works Cited page.
Summarize your article (500 Words).Think of the “Five W’s” (Who? What? When? Where? Why?). Make sure to give your reader a clear overview of the issue using one or two brief quotes from the article to support your summary.
Analysis: Next, write a 500 word analysis of the issue using Marx’s theoretical framework as an interpretive lens. What concepts (use/exchange-value, equality under the law, the process of exchange and the circulation of capital, the sale and purchase of labor power, the production of surplus value, etc.) are at play? Does your analysis based on Marx’s framework differ from the analysis offered in the article? if so, how?
Example: If you read an article on the housing crisis in the Bay Area, the author might explain it in terms of supply and demand; there are more people in the Bay Area than there is housing, and the increased demand leads to an increase in price. In contrast, you might link the crisis in housing insecurity to the fundamental contradiction that arises from treating housing as a commodity, which could be explained in terms of the contradiction between a home’s use-value and its exchange value. On the one hand, you have property owners, acting as capitalists, who buy more and more property in order to realize the exchange value (either by selling the property when the market is up, or else by renting the property). On the other hand, you have people who are interested in a home’s use-value–it’s utility as a shelter, gathering place, etc.–and their relationship to property-owners is antagonistic (via rent increases, poor maintenance, etc.). Your essay would analyze the crisis using these terms from Capital (including textual evidence and in-text citations for relevant terms/definitions/concepts, etc.).
Tone/style of essay: I would like the tone to be of a freshman in college, not too professional, and I want it to be simple.
