The topic of my research paper is Language as a Tool of Governance in Colonial Hong Kong and Its Effects in Postcolonial Hong Kong. I have attached the essay outline and my current draft (only very little have been written) for your review. I also attached relevant papers for your reference.
Basically, after the introduction and the theoretical framework, I would like to give an overview of the language policies in Colonial Hong Kong when English was the sole official language. Then I will explore the impact of such policy on Hong Kong in aspects like education, social mobility, employment, etc. using Bourdieu′s theoretical framework.
Then, I would like to give an overview of the events in late Colonial Hong Kong leading up to Chinese being incorporated as an official language as well. Then I will explore the impact of such events and their impacts on Hong Kong in aspects like education, social mobility, employment, etc. using Bourdieu′s theoretical framework.
I will also want to reconcile this addition of Chinese as an official language by saying it is a flexible governance approach (see this paper: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/349292583_Colonial_governance_and_state_incorporation_of_Chinese_language_the_case_of_the_first_Chinese_language_movement_in_Hong_Kong) Use as many sources as you need.
