Guidelines for Research PaperFor the research paper I want you to pick a topic that interests you. If does not
have to be anything of interest to me. It just has to look at some issue sociologically
within the realm of Medical Sociology. The topic should have a narrow focus. A topic
such as the “Medicine Today” is both too broad and hard to relate to sociological
concepts. However, looking at “Why there is a higher prevalence for diabetes for black
males over 50” is more manageable.I am looking for research that draws from scholarly sociological (or
psychological, economics etc.) journals, newspapers such as “The New York Times”,
Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and Los Angeles Times, and scholarly internet
sites. Articles from tabloid papers (“The Daily News”, New York Post) and
newsmagazines (Time etc.) are not recommended. You should also avoid textbooks,
Wikipedia, and lecture notes. These are all secondary sources. To access the sociological journals, you should go through the “Electronic
Resources” section on Hunter Library’s Web Page. I recommend searching through
“Electronic Journals” and utilizing Lexis-Nexis, Proquest-Direct, EBSCOHost, and
JSTOR. These are research databases that will provide citations and sometimes the full-
text of articles based on the subject you enter. A more refined topic will yield better
results and reduce the number of citations you have to look through. You can also look
through other areas of the “Electronic Resources” section on the Hunter Library website
for other research options. In our other assignments, I wanted to hear your opinion concerning the issues we
were addressing. In the research paper you are taking a topic and finding out what has
been said about it already. This is an objective exercise. Do not raise an issue and find
the material only relevant to one side of an issue, both sides have to be equally addressed. The paper should clearly state your topic, present the available evidence on the
issue, how this topic is sociologically relevant, and the conclusions you draw from your
research. You do not have to format the paper exactly in this manner, but make sure you
cover the key points outlined above. Make sure that thoughts that are not your own are
correctly cited. If you copy or paraphrase, a citation should appear at the end of the
thought (Korall 2024:90). I am looking for your own words supported by the research
material you choose, not 4-6 pages of paraphrasing.2I am interested in the research materials you obtain, and how effectively you
present the evidence about your subject, its sociological relevance, and the conclusions
you draw. I am always looking for these papers to be well-organized and well-writtenThe paper should be about 4-6 pages in length. It is no problem if it is a little
shorter or longer. However, please do not make it 2 pages or 8 pages. It should be
double-spaced. It should include 5-10 citations (following the copied or paraphrased
thought) and a bibliography.
