For this assignment, you will draw on your annotated bibliography to produce a literature review.
The paper should be no more than 2000 – 2250 words following the latest APA conventions. Make sure to include relevant sources throughout your paper – and do not limit yourself to previous course readings. Use at least 15 references.
A literature review involves systematic research to capture at least 2 or more different perspectives, trends, methodologies, and/or debates in the research and literature. Literature reviews require a systematic integration of existing research related to a particular issue or research problem and identifying a gap or limitations in existing patterns of thinking on the topic. The literature is to be written in a format that could be a stand-alone section/chapter in a larger piece of writing (such as a report or proposal), be concise and focused in relation to the topic of your choice. Further details on this assignment will be provided by the instructor.
A literature review is a piece of discursive prose, not a list describing or summarizing one piece of literature after another. It’s usually a bad sign to see every paragraph beginning with the name of a researcher. Instead, organize the literature review into sections that present themes or identify trends, including relevant theory. You are not trying to list all the material published, but to synthesize and evaluate the value of the literature for the research question you are trying to answer.
Your final submission should include:
- an introduction stating your topic, problem, research question(s) and purpose of the paper;
- description of your search & review strategy explaining how you have approached your review (e.g., what strategy did you use to identify your articles, what key words did you use, what were your inclusion/exclusion criteria? etc.);
- a critical literature review that engages both with the topic and findings as well as methodologies used to explore them. When appropriate, consider using tables/charts to illustrate similarities and differences among articles. Describe, compare, contrast, and critique the articles.
- a conclusion bringing your work together and identifying a specific focus for further research (conceptual gaps, unanswered questions, AND methodological flaws you identify).
- references/ writing quality: Text is well organized, legible and conforms to the style and grammatical conventions that match the purpose of the writing. APA format is followed for writing, citations and reference list. Where material is copied from published and unpublished sources, this is noted and attribution provided, including copyright approval where appropriate. Sources are properly referenced.
