In this Assignment, you will review existing research focused on the application of clinical systems. After reviewing, you will summarize your findings.
New technology—and the application of existing technology—only appears in healthcare settings after careful and significant research. The stakes are high, and new clinical systems need to offer evidence of positive impact on outcomes or efficiencies.
Nurse informaticists and healthcare leaders formulate clinical system strategies. As these strategies are often based on technology trends, informaticists and others have then benefited from consulting existing research to inform their thinking.
Your proposal was well received and so this week you are asked to conduct a literature review. For the purposes of this example, your literature review would be on technology used for nurse handoffs.
The purpose of literature reviews is to provide leadership with current (within 5 years) evidence-based research so they can make an informed decision to either invest or not to invest in the project.
So, with the stage set, this week you will be doing a literature review on the use of one clinical system/technology that is focused on improving patient outcomes and providing staff, and/or patient efficiencies. You can, as my example above shows, use what you proposed, but you do not have too.
The formatting used for this assignment is called annotated bibliography
remember to PICK JUST ONE clinical system (PLEASE NOTE: DO NOT CHOOSE TO CONDUCT YOUR RESEARCH ON THE EHR, EMR, PMR, PHI, CDSS, CPOE, HSI, or HIT. DO NOT ADD AI IN FRONT OF ANY OF THESE EITHER. These clinical systems are made up of many systems, and thus outside the scope of this assignment. Adding AI in front of any of the ones listed does not change the system. If you want to double check the clinical system you choose fits the intent of this assignment, just email me.
Papers submitted on the EHR, EMR, PMR, PHI, CDSS, CPOE, HSI, or HIT will not be accepted and will be returned for you to try again. You will also be penalized up to 20% for turning in a late paper.
Here’s a few suggestions: patient portals, telehealth (focus on one particular chronic illness/disease), telemedicine (focus on one particular disease), bar coding, wearable technology, smart pumps.
Please make sure your research is recent (within the last 5 years) and focused on your one chosen system. Please address the following:
- ID the 4 peer-reviewed articles you reviewed, citing each in APA format
- Include an introduction explaining the purpose of the paper. Remember, introductions are concise and to the point.
- Summarize each study, explaining the improvement to outcomes, efficiencies (staff/patient), and lessons learned from the application of the clinical system each peer-reviewed article described. Be specific, use the terminology, and provide examples.
- It is key to summarize…please be clear and concise, I am looking for only 4-5 pages. Think of it this way–you want your reader to easily find your summary/analysis to the specific questions noted on the assignment. Your summary will help them decide to invest in the technology or not.
- In your conclusion, synthesize the findings from the 4 peer-reviewed articles. The key word is synthesizing (if you are not sure what the word means, please look it up). Tie it back to your introduction/reason for picking the system. Again, keep it concise and to the point.
- Use APA formatting and include a title page
- Number your pages
- NO RUNNING HEAD/ NO RUNNING HEAD
- Use the Turnitin tool to check your match percentage before submitting your work.
Please format your assignment as an annotated bibliography (template can be found at the Writing Center, Walden SON websites or attached to the Announcement). As just a reminder please make sure you check your Turnitin report, if you find that 100% of your references are listed from someone else’s work, you might want to try searching for different material. If your paper has a lot of highlighted sentences…make some changes.
The goal of this assignment is to expose you to conducting evidence-based research using current (within 5 years) peer-reviewed articles. This assignment should also help when you work on your final paper as a future DNP or PhD, which is a goal I hope is on your bucket list. Anyway, conducting research using specific questions and putting it on an annotated bib is not uncommon; in fact, it is a very quick and easy way to offer your leadership information on a particular topic/project. As a soon-to-be advanced practice nurse, I am pretty sure this will come in handy when you want to make a practice/workflow change, upgrade technology within your clinic, or even start a new product line.
