Research

      • Number of Research Sources: Two.
        • One of the sources should be from an Academic Database. This can either be literary criticism as with your first essay (a secondary source) or an interview with the poet (interviews are considered primary sources).
        • One of the sources should be found using the internet (Google, etc.). This can either be literary criticism as with your first essay (a secondary source) or an interview with the poet.
        • Please make sure that at least one of the two sources is a secondary source–that is, literary criticism of the kind you found for your previous research essay. Both sources can be literary criticism if you want: an interview with the poet isn’t required; it’s just an option this time.
  • Quoting Requirements

Here are the requirements for quoting from your Primary and Secondary Sources for the Poetry and Literary Elements Research Essay

    Primary Source Quotes

          • In case you’ve forgotten, your Primary Source is the poem you’ve chosen to analyze and research. This time, you’ll need 2-3 quotes from the primary source (the poem) in each of the body paragraphs.
          • Research Sources Quotes
      • These are the two sources you found by conducting research, one from an academic database and one from the internet.

You’ll need a total of three quotes from your research sources. This means you’ll be quoting from one of your two sources more than once. You may use a combination of direct quotes and paraphrases when citing from your research sources: please use two direct quotes and one paraphrase.

        Works Cited

Please don’t forget to include a Works Cited. It should have entries for your poem as well as the two research sources. Use the database’s Citation Tool to get the information for the database source (review how to do that in Module Five). For your internet source, use this handout:
