Looking Assignment On Potrait Bust Of A Priestess (Portrait of a Flavian Priestess)

The instructions for this assignment are all attached in the attached files section. The most important part of the instructions is this: “Please give sustained attention to every element of the object you choose to sketch, which will help you understand its composition and meaning.  Some questions to consider while viewing and sketching the objects include: How does the size contribute to the work’s overall effect?  How does light and shadow function in the work?  What impact does the work’s texture have?  How do the various elements work together?  How do these elements convey meaning?  What makes this work Roman?  Are there any eclectic elements within the work?  How is the work similar to or different from any objects we discussed in class?  How would a Roman viewer respond to this work?  Basically talk more about what you see in the pictures and then relate it back to the description of the statue.

I have also attached an example of a previously completed Looking Assignment, so you can look at it to better understand what to write about.

(please mention if the portrait is veristic or idealistic, and the use of chiaroscuro when it applies because they are the class’s most significant talking points.)

Each assignment must include a sketch of ONE of the objects discussed during the visit and a short two page (double spaced, 12 point font) written description of your object with brief consideration of how it relates to issues, themes and monuments discussed in class.”
