A reflective reaction essay gives the reader of the journal article the opportunity to share his/her opinions aboutthe article. It is an exercise in critical thinking and analysis. One writes about what one learned from the article, one’s opinion about the strengths and weaknesses of the study, how the study compares to the reader’s existingknowledge, and what else should be researched in relationship to the article’s study (authors’ next steps). It is not a summary of the article. It is not a critique of the authors’ writing style or the reader’s ability to comprehend (for example, don’t say that the article was easy to read, math was hard, enjoyed the article, etc). This type of essay is usually 1 to 1 1/2 pages.
