Instructions:

After having identified a data source, formulated a measurable research question, and selected appropriate variables from the database, students will analyze the data and report findings using tables and graphs.

  1.  From your selected data source, select a sample of 20 or more cases for analysis. You are encouraged to use a random sampling method. Given the example of incidence of HIV in rural vs. urban women in the year 2022-2023, you would randomly select areas or counties designated as rural and urban. NOTE: There are free online random numbers generators to help with this.
  2. Describe your methods
  • Sample selection, including the number of cases included and how they were selected, e.g., simple random selection, stratified random selection, all available, other.
  • State your null and alternative hypotheses. For the example on incidence of HIV in rural vs. urban women, my null hypothesis is that there is no difference in HIV incidence between rural and urban women; my alternative hypothesis is that the HIV infection incidence is higher among rural women. 
  • State type of analysis, e.g., descriptive, for example, COVID-19 deaths by state, age group, and race/ethnicity; or analytic, e.g., comparison of case-fatality rates among COVID-19, pneumonia, and influenza.
  1.  Data Analysis: Describe how you analyzed the data to answer your research question
  • Describe epidemiological measures used to analyze the data, e.g. rates, proportions, relative risk, odds ratio, case fatality rate, measures of central tendency and dispersion/variation (means and standard deviations or median and interquartile ranges)
  • Identify your dependent and independent variables and how they are measured, e.g., nominal, ordinal, interval, and ratio.
  • Tables: describing study population, data analysis results
  • Graphics showing data
  1. Comparison of findings: Review the literature on your topic and compare your findings to those of previous investigators (approximately 3 or more recent publications, within the past 5 years, on the topic)
  2. Significance: Speculate on the significance (importance) of your findings to public health and how your findings might be used, e.g. to inform policy, to educate the community, etc.
