Matthew Restall and Kris Lane, ‘Black Communities’ [in Latin America in Colonial Times (2018, 169-192)]

Background: This assignment covers black communities during the ‘Middle Period’ of Latin American colonial history (ca. 1600-1800), when slavery was expanding and numerous official and other classifications arose to describe the circumstances of affected individuals and groups.

Guidelines Question:

Based on the assigned chapter in Restall and Lane (including maps and drawings), write an essay analyzing the structure and historical significance of labor systems operating in Black communities, including the development of economic and social practices that either were imposed from without or developed independently.   Make sure to analyze and synthesize the concepts of ‘mass slavery’ and ‘auxiliary slavery’ as presented in the text, using specific examples.

**      Note that this assignment–as all paper submissions throughout the semester–requires that you write at least four full paragraphs of at least 5 sentences each and address all guidelines prompts to cover the assigned source thoroughly and develop an original interpretation based on concrete evidence.  Make sure to excerpt at least one direct quotation of one full sentence to highlight the source’s findings–citing authors/page numbers (i.e., Restall and Lane, 43).
