1) First, carefully read this NIH webpage: https://www.nccih.nih.gov/health/complementary-alternative-or-integrative-health-whats-in-a-nameLinks to an external site.
2) Next, please READ and think about how you will ANSWER all of these questions thoroughly (the question prompts are there to help you be more detailed, they do not need to be restated in the paper!!):
-
-
- Medical Condition: What was the medical or mental health issue that this person (you or a family member or a friend, use whomever you like – maintaining privacy) that initiated the desire for other treatment? Which one (Pick ONE!)
- Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) Practice: What was the one (PICK ONLY ONE) CAM practice used to address THAT specific medical or mental health issue? DEFINE that CAM practice (use course reading and/or the NIH website, remember to cite your source). Was CAM provider consulted? Or, were treatments and CAM practices used without the oversight of a provider? What specific techniques or treatment methods were used? What were the results? BE SPECIFIC!!
- Link to Health Belief System: Using provided course materials, which Health Belief System (or SystemS) link/s to your specific CAM practice use (i.e., under which category does this CAM practice fall?). Briefly define Health Belief. BE SPECIFIC!!
- Three Journal Articles to Support CAM Use : Using the Broome Library Databases, please locate, discuss, and cite THREE or more academic journal articles that support this form of CAM as an effective form of treatment (and/or other conditions treatable with this use of CAM). BE SPECIFIC and CITE YOUR SOURCES!

3) Next, using the Broome Library databases, research/find AT LEAST three Academic Journal articles or Academic Book Chapters that support the effectiveness of the specific CAM practice you or another have used (see question prompts below carefully). If you need help from a Librarian, connect HERE. While there is a section that allows you to explain your minimum of three sources used to support your paper, you will ALSO NEED TO CITE YOUR SOURCES IN-TEXT (see if you do not know how to cite sources, please see these Course Resources, and/or make an appointment with a WMC Tutor!).
4) Then, format (organize) your paper with these five sections with these subheaders on the left margin. Fill in, using 1/2″ indented paragraphs, using the content/answers to the provided question prompts.

Reflection
5) Finally, write a thoughtful, intentional REFLECTION in a large paragraph, answering ALL of these questions: What did I learn from doing this paper? Did the research findings that I located strongly support the CAM practice that was used to treat a medical condition? If yes, what does this mean? If not, what does this mean? What would I teach others from this new learning? There is no right or wrong answer in this section, points are awarded for depth of thought and completeness of your responses.
6) End paper with a References page for all sources consulted. There is a minimum of four (at least three journal articles and the NIH article) sources. Paper using more than the minimum number of sources are preferred.
Deliverable
A detailed, organized paper, citing academic research, but populated with real-life examples, and written in scholarly language is required by the due date.
No bullets or phrases, you must indent your paragraphs by 1/2″ and write in full sentences and your best academic writing (NO CONTRACTIONS, no “you”, write out numbers under 100, and so on). This can be single spaced and can be any length. It is acceptable for this paper to use the word “I”, but never “you”. If this is the first paper you have written for me, I suggest you watch my Academic Writing Tips video to increase your writing effectiveness in this course and beyond.
No title page is required for this essay, though good APA style would require it. You may use a separate paragraph for each separate example. The most detailed essays earn the highest number of points.
