Module 1 Analytic Paper: Exclusion, Inclusion and Restorative Responses to Student Behaviors

Read Chapters 1 and 2 of From Exclusion to Excellence (Razer and Friedman, 2017) and then Chapters 1 and 2 of Teaching the Children We Fear (Smith, 2007).  Use the descriptions and theories related to cycles of exclusion and building restorative relationships in From Exclusion to Excellence as frameworks to analyze the stories of classroom experiences described in the first two chapters of Teaching the Children We Fear.  Provide at least two examples of classroom practice that exemplify exclusion and two that exemplify restorative relationships.  Make explicit connections to theory and explain how and why the examples of classroom practice enact those theories.  End with a short reflection on your questions, insights, personal connections, or experiences related to the practices and theories you describe in your paper. 

Please read the Content Warning for Teaching the Children We Fear here.  Dr. Terry Smith wrote this text about her experiences as a beginning teacher in the 1990s.  The book contains language and descriptions of traumatic incidents that may be upsetting.

A recommended outline for this paper would be:

  1. Summarize the analytic framework (key points) from Razer & Friedman (2017)

    1. Cycle of exclusion
      1. Two frames of exclusion
    2. Building restorative relationships
      1. Two concepts of the caretaking role
      2. Four skills for building restorative relationships
  2. Apply the analytic framework to Smith (2007)

    1. Two examples from Smith (2007) that exemplify cycles of exclusion
    2. Two examples from Smith (2007) that exemplify restorative relationships

III.  Reflection on your insights, personal connections, questions
