Module 1: History of Special Education and Inclusive Education Timetoast Timeline

For this assignment, you are going to create a timeline of important events in the history of special education in the United States, including relevant events related to inclusion. You will use a free online Timeline program called Timetoast.

First, you must create a free Timetoast account. Then, determine what you would like to add to your timeline. You can find relevant events from your chapter and/or online resources. I recommend that you have everything prepared and typed in a Word document from which you can paste. Also, have your images and URL links ready to go. Use your textbook and any online resources to help you identify the relevant events/legislation.

Here are short tutorial videos (about 7 min.) to show you how to create a timeline. Watch it before you begin. It is very useful. When you are done creating your timeline, make sure you publish it so I have access.

Timetoast tutorial:

Once you have completed your timeline, make it public.

Sample Timetoast Timelines:
Sample 1: https://www.timetoast.com/timelines/1197566
Sample 2: http://www.timetoast.com/timelines/1066896

The Timeline must include the following:

A minimum of 10 relevant events (e.g., federal and/or state legislation, relevant schools opening, relevant organizations, etc.) There must be a combination. That includes at least one of each.
Each event must include a relevant image and at least a one-paragraph description (minimum of 3 thoughtful and complete sentences) when you open the event. Note: There is a 500 character limit.
At least one event must include a link to a relevant video (e.g., video or online presentation about the law)
At least one event must link a link to a relevant website, such as more information about the event.
At least two events must relate to the inclusion of students with disabilities in less restrictive learning environments such as general education classrooms. It may also be referred to as mainstreaming (which is an older term). This could be laws that supported a least restrictive environment or movements that have supported this concept.
Exceptionally Important: Make sure the keywords describe the event on the flag. If needed, be selective or abbreviate. Anyone looking at the flag should know about which event you are referring to. For example, instead of having “, Thomas Gallaudet founded the” because that is all the space available. You could have “First American School for Deaf” or as much as can fit, with it still including the keywords.
