This movie is available to rent on Amazon for $3.99.  It may be available for free on YouTube or Vimeo though the framing may be weird.

Scratch is a fascinating documentary of the emergence of a new musical genre.  Note ways that this genre conforms to more traditional musical genres of the past.  Then note ways that this genre forges new territories in music creation, performance and consumption.  Some things to consider might be the skill level required, the level of dedication to the craft, the use of technology, the relationship to the fan base, the nature of live performance and the nature of recorded performances.  Do you consider scratch practitioners to be musicians?  You must include three references to specific elements from the movie.  

            You will watch the movie that is assigned and write a response to the question or questions I have raised.  There are no “right” answers but I expect you to reference the reading and/or video material where asked or appropriate.  Write 400 to 500 words for your Movie Response (minimum response length is 400 words). 



2. Reading: Cook: “Conclusions”

A CRITICAL REVIEW of the assigned reading. (minimum 300 words, not including quotes.  600 word maximum submission length.) 

First, briefly summarize the topic and findings of the article as the author might state them.

Second, critique the work with positive and/or negative assessments of various elements from the selection. 

The review must include at least two direct quotes from the reading.  Please keep the quote lengths to a maximum of 2 sentences. 

You must tie your quotations in directly with your topic summary and/or your critique.

Your language need not be formal.

3. Self-directed Music Response Instructions

Please consider one or two elements from the class videos or readings and select one song or musical selection that you believe represent an interesting aspect of, or commentary on, the element(s) you have chosen.  These could be related to music and identity, authenticity, original and copy, technology, copyright, appropriation, repurposing, interpretation, music as art, music in every day life or any other element that you’ve studied in this class this semester.  

Be sure to focus on the relationship of the work to the larger historical or cultural circumstances – do not focus on the history of the artist.  

Please list both the title of the piece and the artists.  

Write a minimum of 400 words – Maximum of 600 words.
