argue that both of the books encourage self-acceptance as well as cultural diversity in the children’s literature.
“Whoever you are” and “I like myself” clearly talks about diversity and self- acceptance. “Whoever you are” focuses on the common things like smile, heart, cry, laugh; that shows unity in different individuals from different places and cultures around the world. On the other hand, “I like myself” focuses on the self acceptance and shows how a person can have so many qualities. Both of the texts help the children to learn about cultural diversity and self acceptance. It also teaches them the importance of respecting variety and individuality both at the same time.
Text 1: “Whoever you are” by Mem Fox
“Whoever you are” focuses on the common things like smile, heart, cry, laugh; that shows unity in different individuals from different places and cultures around the world. “Smiles are the same and hearts are the same — wherever they are, wherever you are, wherever we are.” (Mem fox, 1997)
*You do not have to choose exactly three main points (this template is just meant to get you started).
Text 2: “I like myself” by Karen Beaumont
On the other hand, “I like myself” focuses on the self acceptance and shows how a person can have so many qualities. “Inside, outside, upside down, from head tp toe and all around, I like it all! It all is me! And me is all I want to be”. (Beaumont, 2004)
