  • Introduction:
    • needs an audience hook to open, not a general statement, as your first sentence; I recommend you use statistics in your hook.

    • Intro paragraph should end with your thesis statement which must be an argument thesis statement with a clear and coherent argument, counterargument, and a point of evidence or cause related to your topic. 
      • A thesis statement cannot be spread across multiple sentence and cannot be a question
  • second paragraph should be a context paragraph, providing background info and context that the reader will need before engaging with your argument in the body of the paper.  Your context paragraph must be supported by research sources and should be substantial.  A lot of the background info that students tend to include in the introduction actually belongs in the context paragraph.  Do not present points of argument in the context paragraph – it’s for the argument’s background and context.
  • body paragraphs — recommended structure:
    • each body paragraph should open with a topic sentence that contains the argument for that paragraph as well as a counterargument. 
    • Then explain/clarify your argument point. 
    • Present your evidence from your research along with necessary relevant citation
    • Analyze that research and explain its relation/importance to your thesis. 
    • A transition sentence to segue to the next paragraph. 
    • Repeat this pattern for remaining body paragraphs.
  • conclusion — should mirror the introduction hook, recap major points, and leave the reader with something to think on
  • Works Cited page in correct MLA format with at least 6 sources
