My Project Question : Analysing the root cause of stigma surrounding mental health in Pakistan For this TMA you are required to: provide a working title for your project provide a literature review outlining the rationale for your study state your research question and, where relevant, your hypothesis/hypotheses. Word limit: 1500 words total excluding reference list. The title of your literature review is part of the assignment and so it is included in the word count. You are advised to use a maximum of 50 words on the title and research question together. Your working title should be short and mention the method and topic you propose to investigate. Your literature review should draw on evidence from three to five studies you have found in academic journals, book chapters or contributions to edited volumes, but not textbooks. You should evaluate these studies and identify a gap in the literature (or limitations with previous work) that your project will aim to fill or address. You should then use your review of the literature to justify your research question or hypothesis. Note that TMA02 is a very important step in your DE300 project journey, so please make sure you devote sufficient time and effort to it. The assignment provides an opportunity for your tutor to comment on the suitability of your project idea, clear up any misconceptions about the chosen method and most importantly, check on the appropriateness of the research question and, where relevant, the hypotheses. Please note that you will have the opportunity to tweak or change your question and hypotheses later, in the light of the feedback you receive. when looking at the literature, think about questions such as: did the articles agree or disagree in their findings? Were there any conflicting findings? What methods did they use? Were there any limitations associated with these? Are there any crucial things missing? Can the results be interpreted in a different way? Structure Like an essay, a literature review is essentially made up of three different sections: an introduction, the main body and conclusion. However, compared to an essay, these sections contain slightly different information and have a slightly different focus. The introduction should explain the broad context of your research area and the main topic(s) you are interested in and why (defining any key terms, if necessary). It should also include a brief overview of the format your review will take. The main body makes up the bulk of the review. Here you should include details and critical analysis of the literature that is relevant to your research. This should serve to contextualise your own study by illustrating how it builds on what has been done before. For TMA 02, this should include three to five studies. An important part of the review is to provide a critical assessment of the chosen studies, comparing and critically evaluating the different contributions to the literature. The review should therefore, go beyond simply providing a list, or description, of the published papers or chapters that you identified in the literature search. Instead, it should aim to identify any patterns and shortcomings in the literature, which can then be used to justify or explain the need for your own research. For example, your review this might include one (or more) of the following: a discussion of significant patterns, relationships or themes within the literature a discussion of areas where there are unresolved questions or conflicting evidence the consideration of methodological or theoretical weaknesses within different studies that need to be addressed identification of areas that have been under-researched or not researched at all, whether generally, or by your chosen method. In terms of the ‘shape’ of the review, you should start off with a general, wider view of the literature, gradually narrowing it down to address the specific focus of your research. It should allow the reader to understand what you are doing and why you are doing it. The conclusion should summarise the key aspects of your review. You must describe any significant problems or gaps within the existing research, supported with citations, and explicitly explain how your proposed study is going to address these gaps or build on the existing literature to produce something new. You should end this section with your proposed research question and/or hypotheses, linking your research to existing knowledge. Your research question and/or hypothesis should read as a logical conclusion to the discussion of the literature.
