The best essay will proceed through a close reading of the source text and offer a careful and critical interpretation of the main conclusions and inferences of that analysis. A good critical interpretation is not necessarily one that finds fault with the original text but is always one that makes that text clearer and more comprehensible on its own terms, whether one ultimately agrees or disagrees with its position.
