Observation: Lesson Plan Analysis – High-Leverage Practices in the Mathematics Classroom

High-leverage teaching practices are essential routines and strategies that teachers should implement in order to create a safe, student-centered learning environment.

Directions:

  1. Read about high-leverage teaching practices. – https://www.cde.state.co.us/comath/effectivemathteachingpractices
  2. View this 3rd grade OA Multiplication & Division lesson video. – https://achievethecore.org/page/2958/problem-solving-with-multiplication-and-division
    • Be sure to hit the “+” symbol under “Lesson Video” to access.
    • View the included lesson plan in the “Lesson Plan and Student Handout” section.
  3. Using the resources above, use the following questions to formulate an analytical reflection:
    • Based on your observation, what was the lesson objective for this activity?
    • Which high-leverage practices did you observe in this lesson? Pick at least high-leverage practices with evidence from the video (include time stamps).
    • Elements of The Delaware Teacher Classroom Observation Framework –   https://education.delaware.gov/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/dtgss_observation_framework.pdf – you observe within the video (DTGSS).
    • If you were to teach this lesson in the future, are there any changes you would make to the plan? Why or why not? If so, what would the changes be? Be specific as possible.
      • Be mindful of your phrasing when sharing your thoughts with the group– we must be respectful and professional when referring to other teachers and their teaching practices.
