You are to directly evaluate the level of freedom on a 1-10 scale (5 is not an option) and support your answer with specific examples and events; do not straddle the fence or be ambiguous about your position. You should present your evaluation in your first paragraph, and the rest of your essay should be the analysis that supports your evaluation (why was their freedom that level? Prove that their freedom was that level). Do not simply write a narrative of events (this happened, then this happened, then this happened…).

– How did formerly enslaved persons define freedom?
– How did the Black Codes affect formerly enslaved persons’ freedom?
– How did the Freedmen’s Bureau affect the freedom of formerly enslaved persons?
– What did the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments do for black freedom?
– What, if any, actions did the formerly enslaved persons take to ensure their freedom?
– Did sharecropping affect the freedom of formerly enslaved persons?

• typed in Microsoft Word
