Background:
In the Grand Strategy and National Security course, you have learned about the international security environment and how the United States interacts with it in the pursuit of national interests.
Within the context of the international security environment, you studied U.S. grand strategy and national interests as well as the means that the United States has created – the IOPs – to help pursue its objectives. You have read about and discussed grand strategy as a concept as well as NDS. Additionally, you have studied the U.S. grand strategic organizations and processes – the interagency process. The National Command Authority and the interagency process employ the diplomatic, informational, military, and economic instruments of power together in the continual struggle to secure U.S. national interests in the anarchic international security environment.
How well the United States is able to understand the forces in the international environment, how appropriately it can craft IOPs, and how wisely it can employ them determine the security and future wellbeing of the United States. It will be your mission this week to assess what you have learned and tie it all together as you write your final essay exam.
At the completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Analyze the impact of national interests, policy, and strategy, on international relations, military planning, and policy of the United States and key allies.
- Comprehend the types of arguments in the assigned readings about US interests and consider how these recur in public discussion and in the making of US strategy.
- Analyze why the strategy-making process is complex and difficult.
- Analyze the utility of the instruments of national power for gaining national security objectives.
Final Essay Exam:
Choose one national interest highlighted in the National Defense Strategy and the National Security Strategy of the United States. Examples could include great power competition, terrorism, rogue states, or any other issue that is important to the national security of the United States. Assess how the United States has met this challenge by utilizing each IOP in the DIME. Wrap up your paper by providing your personal conclusion of the success or failure of current grand strategy.
