Panic disorders conduct a literature review of the latest treatments.
Organize your review into a minimum of three treatments and a maximum of four treatments, and find a minimum of 4 sources to evaluate each treatment. You could compare different medications or co-medications, natural supplements including marijuana or psychedelics or a dietary intervention, or your could compare medication alone versus medication assisted psychotherapy, and if you are not satisfied with the medical approach, then you may include a maximum of one section reviewing the evidence for psychotherapy alone.
Your goal of this paper is to look closely at the evidence for each potential treatment and make one final recommendation on which approach you feel has the best supporting evidence. Be sure to pay attention to the Methods sections of the reports you review, look at the sample sizes and compositions (age, gender, race, etc.), the duration and follow up time in the studies, and pay special attention to the conflict of interest disclaimers on page 1 where researchers must report the funding and any conflicts of interest, especially for drug studies.
You should only recommend one of the approaches you reviewed, based on your arguments about the evidence, not your personal opinion.
There is no set number of pages for this assignment, but you must have at least 4 sources for each treatment approach that you review, and a minimum of 15 peer reviewed sources overall. When reviewing medications, only studies from the last 5 years are acceptable. For psychotherapy, studies should not be more than 10 years old.
The paper should have a clear introduction and rational for why you chose this disorder, then 3-4 sections reviewing the evidence for treatment options, and then one final conclusion section where you clearly identify which treatment you feel is best based on your research.
An outline might be:
Introduction – which disorder have you chosen and why, relevant statistics (from CDC, NIH, NIMH)
Then any combination of 3-4 of the following topics (with minimum 4 sources each)
Medication alone treatment(s) – note you can choose to compare medications from different classes in different section (for example, you could compare SSRIs to Atypical anti-psychotics used to treat depression, but don’t write two sections on different SSRIs as they have very similar effects on the brain).
Herbaceuticals – including naturally occurring dietary supplements, dietary changes or marijuana or naturally occurring psychedelics (e.g. psilocybin)
Medication assisted psychotherapy (for example MDMA assisted psychotherapy for PTSD)
Other medical interventions – could include physical interventions like deep brain magnetic stimulation
Psychotherapy alone (if you wish) – for example AA for substance abuse disorder
Conclusion – which approach has the most solid scientific evidence
