Paper 2 Synthesis Matrix:
The format will be attached below that shows the template of the matrix:  5 resources with MLA 9th edition, 5 themes of social media addiction. (required)
– The Synthesis Matrix is a tool for you to keep track of the main ideas (conversations) from the articles you are reading, videos you are watching, and other research you are conducting. A synthesis matrix, once completed, helps you with writing your research paper by establishing the ideas you want to talk about, what to leave out, and what your different sources are saying about those ideas (this is where the conversation happens), allowing you to add your own interpretation of those ideas.
-Step 1.

Find 5 relevant, quality sources (articles, blogs, videos, interviews, podcasts, etc.).

Step 2. (can be combined with Step 3)

Engage (read, listen, watch) with each source and identify the main ideas.

 Step 3.

Start adding to the matrix:

3a. At the top of your matrix, write down the general topic or research question. (Hint: for paper one, the top row will probably be the qualities, ie. grit, creativity, and kindness.)

3b. The first column of the matrix is where you start collecting main ideas for your paper, each starting a new row. (Hint: for paper one, the rows will probably be the qualities, ie. grit, creativity, and kindness.)

3c. Each source has a separate column in the matrix. Write the MLA 9 citation to the source at the top of the column. (For example, what does the source say about grit? How does the source define or evaluate the value of the quality?)

3d. For each source, record the main ideas. If it is a new main idea (i.e. an idea that you haven’t seen yet), create a new row for it. If it is an existing idea, find the cell for your source and that idea. Put a few words in the cell to remind you how the idea is represented in your source.

3e. Fill your matrix, one source at a time. Note that not all main ideas occur in all sources. Some cells are going to be blank.

Step 5. Identify which main ideas you would like to write about but you do not have a lot of information on and/or which main ideas you have a lot of information on and might need to be split up in sub-ideas. Explain in a few sentences. Update your matrix, if needed.
Step 6. In a brief paragraph, based on your matrix, what do you think the general outline of your paper will look like?
Step 7. Pick one main idea (row in your matrix) and write a synthesized paragraph (see example below). NOTE: this paragraph is in APA- we use MLA, so adjust your example accordingly)
