There are 3 major parts: Topic/description; media overview; proposed peer-reviewed articles
Topics
Topic: Here you will describe the intended topic and how it relates/appears in film/tv series. So a broad brief description…
ex Topic: I plan to analyze the portrayal of mental illness in the film It’s Kind of a Funny Story
(2010). This film portrays the story of Charlie, a teen dealing with depression who checkshimself into a psychiatric ward.
This is a very “broad” description – what is “better” is for you to have a specific clear focus
topically… for example here one could improve this to “teen mental illness,” but we also know mental illness is pretty broad, so focusing upon teen depression among boys is more specific anddetailed. Having a specific focus will help you refine your literature to a clear topically related focus – remember, you are not expected to do an extensive lit review on your topic.
(Revise) Topic: I plan to look to look at the deviance of teen/adolescent depression among
boys/men in the film It’s Kind of a Funny Story (2010). This film follows Charlie’s journey as
he checks himself into a psychiatric ward to seek care for his depression. — you will expand
this to give a more substantial paragraph.
(btw- did you notice, I didn’t proofread that — “to look to look” — given that this is a brief

In the syllabus I list the items as (1) para deviance topic (2) citation list and (3) media – but I am

separate page at end!

Brief description: Please don’t give the entire Wikipedia description, but basically the short blurb
that describes a movie or tv show episode. Remember, if you are working with a tv show, you
will likely need several episodes – helpful to include a brief show overview and if you have
already selected episodes, the episode overview. If you’ve not selected specific episodes, just
the overall show is fine. You may pull the synopsis from online, be sure to quote and cite source
