Most full-time college teaching applications usually require a personalized 1-2 page statement on teaching philosophy to be submitted in the overall application process or when submitting a portfolio for promotion. Often, academic administrative positions also require an academic management/leadership statement. Here is your chance to now finally put your thoughts on paper and organize them.
Students will draft their own personal teaching philosophy statement on what they hold sacred about teaching today’s diverse college students as they convey their conception of teaching and learning, a description of how they teach (or would teach), and a justification of why they teach that way (or will teach that way). Perhaps, include a quote to illustrate their specific teaching and student learning beliefs, and include how they see their role as a full-time college professor.
Statements should be general enough to apply to either a two-year or four-year public or private college or university. After this statement, they will then reflect on how they will lead the academic mission of a higher education department, division, or college/school within the larger higher educational institution while supporting efforts to evaluate and improve teaching and connecting students to the fullness of the college’s academic mission and spirit of discovery. Students will elaborate on the paramount skills they see necessary to effectively direct (and someday manage) an academic department (faculty & staff) and singularly being responsible for the overall quality of such a unit.
Use of first person in your 2-3 page narrative is certainly appropriate for this final assignment; label both sections. Avoid education jargon or clichés as you strive for clarity and demonstrate that you have been reflective and purposeful about your own teaching and academic leadership.
