  • Explain a personal philosophy of education 

  • Defend your beliefs about what is most important for children to learn in school


This assignment addresses the following course standards:


InTASC 2. Uses understanding of learners’ commonalities and individual differences within and across diverse communities to design inclusive learning experiences that enable each learner to meet high standards.


Task


You will develop a working philosophy of education. Your philosophy of education will continue to evolve during the course, and throughout your teaching career. This is just the beginning. 


In a short paper (three-four pages, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font, 1-inch margins) you will reflect on your philosophy of education. Your paper must include in-text citations to the readings and a bibliography. You will organize your paper into three sections:


Part One: Philosophy

  • What is my philosophy of education? (Focus on 1-2 of the five philosophies of education we learned about from chapter 6 of Sadker & Zittleman.)

  • What are some main ideas or defining features of that philosophy of education?

  • How does my philosophy of education reflect the type of teacher I want to become?


Part Two: Curriculum and Assessment

Based upon my philosophy of education:

  • How will I determine my curriculum? (In other words, what knowledge do I think is of most worth?)

  • What pedagogical strategies (teaching methods) will I utilize to teach my content?

  • How will I assess my students?

  • How do my curricular, pedagogical, and assessment goals align with my philosophy? 


Part Three: The Learning Environment

Based upon my philosophy of education:

  • What kind of learning environment will I create? Why?

  • What are my core beliefs about classroom management and discipline?

  • How does my learning environment reflect my philosophy of education?
