Phyllis Wheatley’s “On Being Brought from Africa to America” Discussion Board Post

Annotate and take notes over the reading before responding.

Be sure that your discussion board post addresses the three questions below. Number your responses. Revise and edit before submitting.

  1. Provide a brief, original summary of the selection. Explain the story in your own words as if you are explaining the story to a family member or friend. You will not receive credit for plagiarized or AI-developed synopses. Include at least three MLA-cited direct quotes in your summary.
  2. Of the parts of the text you annotated, which are the most powerful? Make a list of at least five (5) words, phrases, sentences OR longer passages that particularly resonated with you (annotations may be text you liked or text you strongly disliked). Explain the significance these words, phrases, sentences, or passages.
  3. Finally, react to the text. You may confirm, appreciate, argue, express frustration with what the author said, but explain why you feel the way you do. Be specific here. This is the most important question.

Remember – Your response (all three answers combined) must be a minimum of 250 words. You must first post your original post before seeing and responding to your classmates’ posts. Your responses to your classmates’ posts do not have to be a minimum of 250 words, but must be thoughtfully developed and show engagement with your classmates’ ideas.
