Learning, Memory, & Cognition!

Please introduce yourself to the class and give us a little information about yourself. Make sure you include your name as it appears on the roster but let me and your classmates know if you prefer to be addressed by a different name.

Hello fellow classmates and Dr.

It is my pleasure to introduce myself as Elaine Gonzalez, who is 39 years old. I hold an Associate of Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant. My profession is that of a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. In a Pediatric Occupational Therapy setting, I have had the privilege of working with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy, and other conditions. With my fourth term of classes beginning in Spring 2024, I will be pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology-Applied Behavior Analysis. As a career path, I am considering ABA Therapy to help people with autism. Looking forward to taking a step toward becoming an even better version of myself. Among my interesting “tidbits” are mom to two boys, ages 4 and 7. Describing myself is not always easy for me, but I can summarize some of my qualities and characteristics as follows: adventurous, observant, organized, and passionate about my family. I enjoy hosting family and friends, traveling, and going to wine tastings to unwind and enjoy life.

·       Understand how cognitive psychology relates to our daily experiences.

·       Understand what perception is and its application.

·       Understand attention and what can affect it.

·       Understand what short- and long-term memory are and how they function and the errors that memory can encounter.

3. How do you think the content of this course will benefit you in your future academic and professional endeavors?

ndrew Comas, 31-year-old male, Born and raised here in Miami, Florida. Currently engaged to the most amazing woman in the world, wedding is set for December 2024. I am in my 5th semester at Albizu for the Bachelor of Psychology program and look forward to working towards my goal. I work as an educator for Miami Dade County, I love playing and watching sports, and being from Miami believe it or not, it makes you versatile enough to play multiple positions in various sports.

1. What prior knowledge (if any) do you have of this course topic?

  • It’s been a while since I’ve learned about cognitive psychology. I know it’s the process related to memory usage, and how Alzheimer’s, Dyslexia, and other mental disorders affect the cognitive process.

2. What do you expect to gain from this course?

  • After this course, I fully expect to be able to understand and assist patients with memory and or language disorders. Also seeing what process to use to help minimize the effects of such disorders.

3. How do you think the content of this course will benefit you in your future academic and professional endeavors?

  • In the future even though I would like to work with athletes, first responders, and veterans, I know anyone can have Alzheimer’s and other mental disorders besides Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The content of this course can help me see the early or current signs of Memory/Language disorders in the patient.

Hi Class, I am Geydis. I am Cuban, 37 years old, immigrated in 2006 and have been working for the past decade as a Poker Dealer in the casinos industry across South Florida. I have a son, he is 12-year-old; he gives me purpose and strength to not give up until my dreams are achieved. I am excited about this class as it is a subject, I am passionate about.

Learning

I recall Learning theory concentrates on how learning influences a person’s behaviors. This perspective emphasizes the role of experience, examining whether a person’s behavior is rewarded or punished. This perspective also asserts that people learn from watching others around them.

 Memory

Richard F. Thompson (1992, 2005, 2013) and his colleagues showed that specific memories may depend on localized neural circuits in the brain. Another line of research suggests that memory formation results in alterations in synaptic transmission at specific sites (Erick Kandel, 2001). Kandel believes that durable changes in synaptic transmission may be the neural building blocks of more complex memories, as well. Neurogenesis: (the formation of new neurons), may contribute to the sculpting of neural circuits for memory. There are three processes involved in memory: encoding (getting information in), storage (maintaining it), and retrieval (getting it out). Memory is largely an active process. For the most part, it is unlikely that we remember something unless we make a conscious effort to do so. Experiments revealed that young babies (2-3 months) remember events for days and even weeks at a time showing three important features of memory exist by 2 and 3 months of age: (1) an event from the past is remembered, (2) over time, the event can no longer be recalled and (3) a cue can serve to retrieve a memory that seems to have been forgotten (Rovee- Collier, 1997, 1999). From these origins, memory improves rapidly in older infants and toddlers. These improvements in memory can be traced, in part to growth in the brain regions that support memory (Lukowski & Bower, 2014; Olson & Newcombe, 2014).

Cognition

Cognitive development began with a focus on how children construct knowledge and how the constructions change over time focusing on though processes and in a continuum, the person constructing knowledge actively. One approach postulate that thinking develops in a universal sequence of stages like Piaget ‘s theory suggests. The second approach proposes that people process information as computers do-Information processing theory- is an example of this view. The third approach emphasizes the contributions of culture to thinking and cognitive growth.

Powerful learning and memory skills allow people to learn much more about their worlds. After finishing this class, I believe I will have some extra tips to work on my memory, allowing me to be more effective and wiser while making decisions. Furthermore, extending my understanding of how we organize information into categories for storage creating schemas and conceptual hierarchies. Paying extra attention to information I intend to remember, and the possibly explanations to forgetting memories like Freud’s terminology: repression, to better comprehend the evolutionary processes in Cognition of myself and others and finally to activate new cells evading Alzheimer ‘s disease.
