I chose a quite common policy because I have numerous family members that use tobacco products and I have a 19-year-old that has been curious and attempted to experience tobacco products. The “Tobacco Control Policy” is an important policy used to regulate and reduce the use of tobacco products among consumers, thus leading to improvement in public health. These policies lead to less respiratory complications and risks for cancer, using these carcinogens. This policy heavily impacts health equity by reducing health disparities as mentioned above. It protects vulnerable populations like children, pregnant woman, and non-smokers by utilizing smoke free legislation and advertisement restrictions. The policy prevents youth initiation with increased taxation limiting access to lower income population. Economic factors are also considered with the increased taxation. It allows for more taxes to be charged to smokers, the increased tax on tobacco products contributes to health care costs. Nursing already engages in policy implementation in hospitals, inpatient rehab facilities, and long-term care facilities by providing education on smoking cessation and providing access and information for smoking cessation services.
