Policy Review – address asustainability law or policy issue in Canada, and propose policy/legal solutions.

A written policy brief on an issue related to sustainability law and policy of your choosing.You are to address a sustainability law or policy issue in Canada, and propose policy/legal solutions.  The brief should contain an abstract/executive summary(no more than 250 words)which overviews the sustainability problem that you have chosen, the decision maker for whomthe brief is intended, and the justification for why you have chosen this decision maker to advise.

lssues must be related to Canadian sustainability law and policy. This does not mean that you have to choose a legal case of piece of legislation to discuss as the basis for theissue. You are not explaining a currentbill/statute/case. However, this may be the starting point toidentify your issue. A proposed bill is already addressing some type of problem. You may be proposing a different approach, change to that existing statute or policy. However, you may also be discussing a more general topic, and proposing certain policies or legislative changes that are required to address that issue. Chose a sustainability issue (eg. food security), and propose how existing and new policy measures could help to solve that issue.
Explain in a clear and concise way:

  1. The problem you have chosen(incl. why you have chosen it, why it should be given policy attention). Remember this should be clear, concise, and narrowenough that you can address the issue in a short document);
  2. Factors that contribute to the problem and the contextwithin which the problem is occurring(why is this important, why is it urgent);
  3. Policy objective(s)that you think should be achievedregarding your chosen problem (what are tangible goals that help contribute to solving the overall problem);
  4. Policy options for achieving the stated objectives (these are your results based upon your research – what does the literature/other experiences tell us about how this problem/objectives can be improved);
  5. Criteria that you view as important for evaluating and choosing the best policy option(s)(how do you evaluate the options that you have discovered, how do you cometo your recommendations);
  6. Your recommended policy option(s) for achieving the objective(s),including pros and cons and related to the criteria, and lmplementation issues.
