PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS AND NOTES ATTATCHED TO AVOID UNNECESSARY REVISIONS. Task: Comparative Politics Essay Assignment on how political figureheads should approach establishing an autocratic regime and ensuring stability in their autocratic institutions OFFICIAL ESSAY QUESTION/INSTRUCTIONS – Write an essay on the following scenario; ″The leader of a country with very weak democracy is trying to figure out how to set up authoritarian political institutions in order to maintain power indefinitely. Give advice to this leader about how they should go about this. For example, should they set up authoritarian elections? A single-party system? A monarchy? Something else? Explain why your choice(s) will do the best at increasing the likelihood of regime survival. ″ – The essay should be double-spaced, 12pt font, and should not exceed 2,000 words in length excluding the bibliography (+/- 10%). Good essays must have a clear thesis statement in the introduction section and a well-organized structure of the body of the essay to support your argument. Your thoughts and analysis are important, not summarization of the readings or lectures. For the essay, students are expected to 1) draw on academic literature (academic articles and/or books, NOT textbooks or lectures) and 2) properly cite the academic literature used to prepare the essay. Students are expected to read beyond the required reading list for the essay. For each of these, I suggest using a typical essay format. You can be extra creative and treat it like a memorandum for the country’s leader if you want, but it’s generally simpler to treat it like a normal essay. Overall, focus on making a clearly stated and well-supported argument. Be creative and read widely! Don’t worry about being “right” so much as making your case in a clear, reasoned manner. Don’t try to do too much or argue too much—stay focused and concise. In line with departmental guidelines, this essay must: • Observe the stated word limit (students will not be penalized for a final word count [excluding the bibliography] that is 10% above or below the given limit) • Be submitted to Blackboard as a PDF or Word document • Include an essay cover sheet which affirms that the essay is all the student’s own work. The cover sheet should include the final word count. • Include the student’s name at the top of the essay and in the file name of the file you are submitting • Be spellchecked using any available, English-language spelling and grammar checker • Use proper citation and referencing (any referencing format is acceptable, so long as it is consistent across the essay. The TCD library has this guide: https://www.tcd.ie/library/assets/pdf/Academic%20Style%20Guides.pdf to help you to cite consistently) • Include an alphabetized bibliography ————————————————————————————– Approach paper from a neutral/impersonal perspective. Maybe don′t use an actual country or real leader to advise, just approach the essay from a broader standpoint, fictitious leader/country, blank slate. ———————————————————– when quoting, keep citation style consistent. ——————————————————- Make sure Thesis statement is in intro essay can cover multiple approaches as to how an autocrat can establish a secure position in an autocratic regime but there should be one that stands above the rest that you should be trying to persuade/advise the leader into persuing e.g. Hybrid/Competative authoritarianism (of course a critical analysis of this approach can be included near the end of the paper when assessing limitations etc) ————————————————————– referring back to thesis throughout. intro should be a way for reader to know how your argument is going to pan out —————————————————– must use readings but also can use own knowledge/reading if from academic credible source
