*Need Draft Abstract and Bibliography by TOMORROW – Rest of the Research Paper Due on Nov 30th
*Use PDF File and readings
(Bruce J. Dickson, The Party and the People: Chinese
Politics in the 21st Century (Princeton: Princeton University
Press, 2021).
Bates Gill, Daring to Struggle: China’s Global Ambitions
under Xi Jinping (New York: Oxford University Press, 2022).
William A. Joseph, ed., Politics
in China: An Introduction, 4th ed. (New York: Oxford University
Press, 2024).
1. Style: use Chicago style. Note the difference between citation style of footnotes and bibliography. See the Purdue University OWL for details.
2. Font and spacing: use 12 point font, which font doesn’t matter. Double space the body of your paper; single space the abstract/executive summary and bibliography.
3. File format: your drafts, peer review, and final memo must be either in a Word or PDF file. SafeAssign does not accept other formats.
4. How do I cite online sources? If you use an online source, you must include the full URL and the date on which you accessed the site.
5. How many sources do I need? As a rule of thumb, you should have at least 10 peer-reviewed journal articles and books in addition to assigned readings. You can supplement with media articles, think tank reports, etc., for the most up to date info.
6. How long should the draft be? The draft should be long enough for you to get feedback on what further work needs to be done before you submit your final paper. There is no particular number of pages. The purpose of this assignment is (1) for you to see what you have done so far and what remains to be done and (2) to get feedback that will improve the final paper. At a bare minimum, you should have an intro, detailed outline of the entire paper, and bibliography.
7. Can I get an extension on the draft? No. Your peer reviewer needs time to read your draft and give you feedback. If you don’t turn in your draft on time, you will also not be able to do a peer review. Both will lower your grade on the final paper.
8. How do I email my review to the author? You have two options:
-
In Blackboard, click on Tools –> Send email –> Select Users. You will see a list of the students in the class. Click on the author’s name, click on the > arrow to move that name to the right hand column, scroll down to attach your review, hit Submit.
-
Log into myGW (https://my.gwu.edu/) then click on directories in the left-hand menu, type the author’s name into the search box, and you will see their email address.
9. Does my research memo need an introduction in addition to the Executive Summary? Yes.
10. How long should the final paper be? If you are using 12 point font, one inch margins, and double spacing, less than 10 pages (text, not including notes and bibliography) is too short, more than 30 pages is too long. The sweet spot is around 15 pages, approximately 4000-5000 words.
