process of evidence based practice. You will use resources to transform your clinical questions into searchable terms to continue finding evidence

After you have completed the Week 3: Readings and Resources, complete your initial post using the following criteria:

1. Start your post by refreshing our memories of your PIOT and clinical question.

2. Describe the key words that you will use to search for the evidence.

3. Using the key words you identified, go to the Library Resource page and begin your search. Locate 1 scholarly peer-reviewed quantitative research article, AND1 scholarly, peer-reviewed qualitative research article. These articles should address your clinical question. Sometimes, locating a qualitative article can be challenging. If you have difficulty, please contact your instructor for guidance. For the purposes of this part of the discussion, you are not allowed to use the following articles: meta-analysis, meta-synthesis, systematic review, integrated reviews, Cochrane reviews, concept analysis, and literature review. No mixed-methods designs for Week 3. And, it should not be an evidence-based practice project or a QI project. Therefore, as described in the readings this week, please use the allied health and nursing databases (CINAHL, PubMed, or MEDLINE are good).

4. For each article found, identify the following:

  • The type of methods (quantitative or qualitative).
  • The design (quantitative = quasi-experimental, descriptive, correlational, etc., qualitative = phenomenology, grounded theory, etc.) These details are typically located in the abstract and in the “methods” section.
  • The research question being explored in the study. (Or, if the question is not explicitly stated – the purpose or specific aim).
  • The hypothesis (quantitative, if identified).
  • The population or sample being studied, the setting, and the sample size. (See the video resource on this).
  • The theoretical/conceptual framework (if identified).
  • Quantitative article only: The variables being studied (i.e. nursing retention, burnout, turnover, etc.) (See the video resource).
  • Quantitative article only: The measurement instruments/tools used (See the video resource).
  • Summarize the results/key findings, including the statistical significance (See the video resource).
  • Describe any limitations identified.
  • Level of evidence. (Refer back to this week’s readings for these details. This is key and you will be asked to identify this for all articles moving forward so please review this now).
  • The relevance of each study to address the clinical question in your PIOT.
  • ATTACH BOTH ARTICLES AS A .PDF TO YOUR DISCUSSION. PLEASE LABEL THE .PDF FILES AS QUALITATIVE OR QUANTITATIVE.
  • STUDENTS MUST KEEP CHECKING BACK TO THE DISCUSSION TO ENSURE THEY HAVE RECEIVED INSTRUCTOR APPROVAL FOR THE POSTED ARTICLES. THIS IS ESSENTIAL BECAUSE ONE OF THE APPROVED ARTICLES WILL BE USED FOR THE WEEK 4 CRITIQUES.
  • If your instructor provides feedback in the Week 3 discussion board stating that you need to find another article, you must also summarize that article.
