Project 2: Rhetorical Analysis of Dr. Martin Luther King “I Have a Dream Speech”

In your paper, I am asking you to discuss this issue:

How well does Dr. Martin Luther King use strategies intended to appeal to logic and emotion, along with other rhetorical strategies, to persuade his audience to accept his claim that African Americans had been denied the civil rights granted to them under the Constitution?

You should structure your paper this way:

Paragraph 1:  Provide a brief historical context for King’s speech.  Why was he in Washington in 1963? What was the point of the March on Washington?

Paragraph 2:  Write a rhetorical precis using the format we have discussed and practiced in class.

Paragraph 3:  Name two rhetorical strategies King uses to appeal to the logic or reason of his audience. Give an example of each and explain why King used that strategy with his audience.

Paragraph 4:  Name two rhetorical strategies King used to appeal to the emotions of his audience. Give an example of each and explain why King used that strategy with his audience.

Paragraph 5:  Name two other rhetorical strategies King used to persuade his audience.  These could include such strategies a repetition, story telling, etc.  Give an example of each one and explain why he used them to persuade his audience.

Paragraph 6:  Conclude your paper by explaining whether the rhetorical strategis King used were or were not effective in persuading his audience to accept his argument.
