Proposal Essay (Final Essay) Description
In the Proposal Essay, you will be putting forth a solution to a problem and justifying why said solution should be implemented, who (or what institution/entity) will implement it, and how it will be implemented. You may choose whatever problem you wish for this essay, but be aware that the essay will be graded partially on how original and well thought-out your topic is for the Proposal Essay.
You should base the essay on the work you did for the Research Process Narrative and Annotated Bibliography assignment. Because you are making an argument in this essay, you should have an identifiable thesis statement that is stated explicitly in your introduction.
Throughout this essay, you should work to prove your argument, and be persuasive (in this case, you are trying to prove that your proposed solution is a valid one for your audience to consider). You may want to make some mention of those views that oppose your own and attempt to refute them. The bulk of the essay, however, should be you providing evidence and reasons in support of your own view. To that end, you will need to have eight scholarly sources in this essay which you cite in-text.
Look to establish and maintain your credibility through a dispassionate, academic tone and by using quality scholarly sources. Consider your audience to be someone in your same age/peer group, and keep that in mind whenever you are looking to explain a variety of concepts that might not be familiar to an average college student. Utilize logical explanation and reasoning in order to make your case.
You will be writing a 2,000 word essay that has an introduction, conclusion, and multiple body paragraphs. Please provide a Works Cited page or References page, and type this essay in a Times New Roman, 12-point font with double spacing. This essay can be formatted either in APA or MLA.
Follow the format below to write this essay.
Introduction [~200-250 words]
Your introduction should preview your essay in about 200-250 words. You want an opening hook followed by discussion that introduces your topic and why it’s important. Explain to your audience, in other words, why the problem is in fact a problem. Then, you want to include a preview of some of the discussion that you’re going to have in your essay, including (briefly) how and why the solution that you have proposed is going to actually solve the problem.
***Signal your thesis clearly*** –you should ‘signal’ what it is that you’re going to be arguing by saying at the end of your introduction: “In this essay, I argue that…” and then insert your thesis statement. Please use this form exactly to state your thesis statement. In case you are wondering – yes, you can use first person here to state your thesis statement, but please use third person (he/she/they/it, etc) for the rest of the essay. Avoid using the word “you.” There is an appropriate context to use second person, but this essay isn’t that context.
Body Paragraphs – [~150-250 each, ~1600 words in total]
Next, you need to go about showing how and why your proposed solution to this problem will be effective. Here are some things you should try to address:
- The exact process by which your solution would be carried out. What kinds of steps would be taken for a group of people or an entity to be able to implement this solution?
- The reasons why your solution is better than other solutions out there. Have others tried to solve this problem and failed? How did their solution fail and how will your solution actually solve the problem? Are there are other reasons why your solution is better?
- What kind of timeline are you looking at for the implementation of your solution? How long do you project that this will actually take? What kind of problems, issues, or other obstacles do you anticipate to your proposed solution and how do you think that those could possibly be overcome?
Conclusion – [~200 words]
In your conclusion, you want to review your discussion and wrap up the essay. Restate your thesis (your thesis is just a statement of what solution you think should be implemented in order to solve this problem. Follow up the statement of the thesis with a summary of your body paragraphs, and end your discussion with any remaining thoughts you have on the topic.
Each essay should be at least 2,000 words, double spaced, Times New Roman, typed. Please use paragraphs and do not submit a massive block of text. Please also have a title centered in the middle of your essay. Do not forget to include your name, the date, and your class section. Do not forget to have a Works Cited or References Page at the end of the essay. The working draft of this essay is due on November 3rd and the final will be due December 4th.
Use the attached file for the topic and follow the rubric. Also, I only included 4 sources but you need 2 more. Make sure they’re only scholarly sources and they relate to the research topic. Please provide the sources you use and please give them back in APA Annotation.
