Self – Directed Managerial Applications Component
Self – Directed Managerial Applications Component (SMAC):
Respecting the value of linking knowledge with experience to
enhance learning, students pursuing a Graduate Management Studies degree or
certificate will complete a project in each course, which applies and develops
the functional area of management represented by the course to an appropriate
issue/problem/task within an actual organizational environment.
The SMAC for this course is expected to average 10 – 15
pages in length[1] and must include a “Reference Page”
section with appropriate citations throughout the paper.
Citing only internet addresses is incomplete. Students are required to use
the APA method only. Learning contracts must be submitted
with the SMAC.
Development of Managerial Abilities
According to the Graduate Student Handbook, as part of every
SMAC, students are required to evaluate how successful they were in developing
the targeted abilities relative to that course. Therefore, Managerial
Abilities must be included when submitting your final SMAC.
Students must include how they successfully developed a targeted ability in
his/her SMAC.
As you know the abilities fall within three categories: Goal
and Action Abilities; People Management Abilities; and Analytic Reasoning
Abilities. Although students are not limited to the abilities listed
below and are not required to choose the abilities listed below, a review of
the material that will be covered during this course suggests that the
following abilities may be developed: Systems Thinking and/or Planning.
SMAC Topic Description :
The SMAC for this course is an analysis of a specific health
care problem and the role your healthcare facility plays in trying to address
the problem. The problem may be facility wide, involve a specific
department of a facility, or involve the facility’s catchment area. The
analysis must be related to work experience and self-directed.
Students must pick from one of the categories below to satisfy
the requirements above:
- Proposing
Alternative Solutions to Community-Based Problems. Students must
discuss the challenges and opportunities for improving community health
within their healthcare facility’s catchment area? Students can
discuss any one of the following categories: mental health, gun violence
in the community, overuse of the emergency room, sexually transmitted
diseases , etc. Students must include what are the various roles
that your healthcare facility could play. You must include at least
two possible projects that your healthcare organization could participate
in. You must evaluate the feasibility of these two projects.
- Examining
New Policy Options That Improve Outcomes . Students must
examine the degree to which a policy option, to be implemented within your
facility, requires new operational routines, involves new staffing,
requires new ways of providing services. Students must discuss any
significant threats that would exist from such a change in policy among
stakeholders. A policy option may result from a change in regulation
on a federal, state or local level.
Students must follow the outline
below. Your SMAC will be graded based on how well you follow the outline
below. Students must specifically include all section headings. Do
not include a table of contents.

An Example of How to Approach the Development of a
SMAC Topic:
Let us assume you have picked the category, “Responding to a
Community Problem, and you chose to analyze the provision of health care
services within your catchment area. Because you have been interested in the
current opiate crisis in your surrounding community, you have decided to
analyze what your healthcare facility is doing to address this healthcare
problem. Opioid overdoses and deaths in your community are occurring at
levels greater than the national average. You might begin your analysis
by responding to the following questions:
- What
economic, political, and sociocultural factors influence opioid use
nationally and within your community, particularly in your catchment area? - What
are the drivers of opioid addiction in this community and in your
catchment area? Are there any differences that must be addressed in any
program designed by your healthcare? Organization? - How
widespread is the problem in the community and in your catchment area? - How is
the epidemic affecting the way the hospital provides care to the community
and in your catchment area? - How is
the city currently responding to the opioid crisis and how is your
catchment area affected by this? - How is
the hospital currently responding to the opiate crisis? - What
citywide and hospital policies are currently in place to guide the city’s
response to opioid abuse and addiction? - What
are the costs to the city of the opioid crisis? - What
environmental factors contribute to opioid abuse and addiction? - What
are the biggest barriers to prevention? - What
specific programs does your healthcare facility currently operate? - All
these programs effective? - How
are you measuring effectiveness? - What
might your healthcare facility do to improve its role in fighting this
crisis? - Who
else needs to be part of this conversation?
