PSYC 381: Principles of Statistics and Experimental Design

Project (120 points total)

This project is broken into three pieces to be completed throughout the semester. In each part, you will apply concepts from class to real data.

General Project Instructions:

Present all information (graphs, statistics, etc.) in APA style. Be sure to show your work including all calculations. Final answers using hand calculations should be accurate to the 2nddecimal, but you may wish to keep more precision during intermediate steps of your calculations. Please submit each write-up to Canvas as either a Word or PDF file. When asked to provide figures or output from SPSS, include figures/screenshots of the output in your larger document.

Part 3 (40 points)

Use the data gathered in Part 2 to test the following research hypotheses:

A. Is there a gender difference in level of worry regarding gun related violence? Set alpha at 0.05.1. State your hypotheses. What is the null hypothesis? The research hypothesis?2. Determine the appropriate test and determine the critical value. 3. Calculate the statistical test. Show all of your work.4. Make a decision regarding whether or not to reject the null hypotheses.5. Calculate and interpret the effect size (either Cohn’s D or r2).6. Enter the data into SPSS to check your work. Did you get the same results with SPSS? Include the SPSS output along with your hand calculations.

Why did you choose the test that you did? If your test was not significant give at least two reasons why you think that it did not reach statistical significance. If your test was significant, give at least two reasons why you believe you found a statistically significant difference between groups

Describe your finding using APA style. Clearly state your conclusions regarding gender and degree of worry regarding gun violence.

B. Is age related to level of worry about gun related violence? Set alpha at 0.05.1. State your hypotheses. What is the null hypotheses? The research hypotheses?2.

If your test was significant, give at least two reasons why you believe you found a statistically significant relationship between age and worry.

Describe your finding using APA style. Clearly state your conclusions regarding age and degree of worry regarding gun violence.

5

1. Gender difference: appropriate test and rationale 2. Gender difference: hypotheses, critical value, hand calculations are accurate and are provided in the report 3. Gender difference: SPSS – data entered, provided and analysis completed correctly 4. Gender difference: Made correct decision and reported findings using APA style. Considered effect size and reasons results did or did not reach statistical significance. 5. Age and worry: appropriate test and rationale 6. Age and worry: hypotheses, critical value, hand calculations are accurate and provided in the report 7. Age and worry: SPSS – data entered, provided and analysis completed correctly 8. Age and worry: Made correct decision and reported findings using APA style. Considered effect size and reasons results did or did not reach statistical significance.
