Principles of Public International Law Essay
Aim
The aim of this assignment is to test your learning progress half way through the PPIL course. The
exercise consists in identifying relevant legal issues given a set of facts, in applying relevant applicable
legal rules and in reasoning about them. It constitutes 30% of your final grade.
Instructions
Read the facts carefully, identify the relevant legal issues, identify the applicable sources of law (bear
in mind issues of legal validity, especially with treaty law), apply the law to the facts and conclude – in
accordance with the IRAC structure.
Assignments should not exceed 1000 words (including footnotes).
Grading criteria
Assignments will be assessed according to the following criteria:
▪ Capability to distinguish relevant facts from non-relevant facts;
▪ Capability to identify relevant legal issues;
▪ Capability to identify and apply applicable legal sources;
▪ Reference to relevant judicial decisions;
▪ Appropriate lexicon;
▪ Logical reasoning;
▪ Structure and clarity;
▪ Critical reflection.
