Reaction Paper Students will be required to submit a 2-3 page (double-spaced) reaction paper responding on Williams, R. 2003. A state of permanent exception: the birth of modern policing in colonial capitalism. Interventions International Journal Of Postcolonial Studies 5(3): 322-344.
For this assignment, present your summary account of how the author you have chosen: (1) defines policing; (2) describe whether the author accounts for developments in policing in terms of instrumental, structural, or conceptual terms (as defined in our lectures and in the Kempa reading in Lecture 2).
Complete the paper by telling us whether you think their chosen theoretical perspective on policing is helpful in terms of revealing the most interesting things about the birth of policing, or whether some more interesting points on policing may come from one of the other perspectives (does their perspective tend to miss something important about the birth of policing, that is better revealed by using one of the other perspectives?).
