Examining Media-Made Families
This assignment (100 points) is meant for you to take what
you have learned so far about families and family communication and apply it to
a family represented in the media. Pick a family represented in a TV show,
movie, or book. Answer the following questions about the representation of that
family’s communication in a paper (minimum of 6 pages not including the
references page and the cover page).

What type of family is it (extended,
multigenerational, blended, single parent, etc.) and how do they define
themselves? (page 18 to 22)

Who are the members of the family and how are
they portrayed?

What significant issues (structural and
demographic influences, economic influences, cultural influences {page 22 to 30)
define the construct of this family and their media image? Provide at least two
examples.

Use the “Family Communication Patterns
Theory (conversation orientation and conformity orientation, four family types)”
from {Chapter 2 page 59 to 62} to discuss that family’s communication style.

From Chapter 3, use the “Communication Accommodation Theory” {page
83 to 86} to explain how that family {from the tv show or movie you chose}
deals with one particular situation.

questions and relate the concepts to the particular family you have chosen for
