One of your readings for this week states, “The difference between social entrepreneurship and social service is not the initiative behind the business, but the outcome. Social enterprises typically change industries, whereas non-profits choose to change a particular set of people. A social enterprise sells a good or service that advances a social cause and are structured just like commercial businesses, with a business model, cost structure, and consumer base.”
It goes on to say, “Charity is like giving apples to those who need it. Nonprofits are content with teaching individuals how to grow apples. Social entrepreneurs will make sure to innovate and create products that will revolutionise the entire agriculture industry.”
That being the case, answer these questions:
1/ Should a nonprofit organization be considered a social enterprise?
2/what should our world be after? Charities? Nonprofits? Social enterprises?
3/Which carries the most weight? Which is most beneficial to the cause?
4/ Can social enterprises solve the funding problem in the nonprofit sector?
Discuss your thoughts and back them up with credible sources. Make sure to go beyond answering the questions and analyze the the information. Discuss how this plays out for national/worldwide nonprofits and then discuss how this plays out with small scale nonprofits. Be specific and use examples.
