Introduction
One of the purposes of this course is to help students identify sources that can be trusted when studying Church history. This learning activity is designed to help you know how to discern how trustworthy a given source is or is not. We will be using part of a book entitled “Real vs. Rumor: How to Dispel Latter-day Myths” written by Dr. Keith Erekson, Director of Historical Research and Outreach at the Church History Library in Salt Lake City.
Learning Goal
Determine what we know and how we know it concerning the First Vision, how the Book of Mormon was translated, and the Restoration of the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthood.
Instructions
STEP 1: Review chapter 2 of “Real vs. Rumor” Download chapter 2 of “Real vs. Rumor”. (sent as an attachment) Pay particular attention to Dr. Erekson’s method of (a) identifying what we know, and (b) explaining how we know it.
STEP 2: Select one of the following miracles from church history:

The First Vision

How the Book of Mormon was translated (focus on the process Joseph used to dictate the book to his scribes)

Restoration of the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthood

STEP 4: Research how we know what we know concerning the miracle you selected. Hint: Use Saints Volume ILinks to an external site. (and the footnotes therein), and the Gospel Topics EssaysLinks to an external site. (and the footnotes therein), and the Church History Topics EssaysLinks to an external site. (and the footnotes therein) to guide your search. (Visit Websites above for links)
STEP 5: For the miracle you selected, choose at least 10 details about the miracle and list them in the What We Know column of the template. Use Dr. Erekson’s Sword of Laban table on pages 30-31 of “Real vs. Rumor” as an example.
STEP 6: For each detail, explain How We Know that detail in the right side of the table. Use the footnote tool in Word to list your sources.
Once completed, submit the document.
