Reflect on your experience learning about Greek mythology throughout this course, focusing on at least a pair of myths that were particularly striking or impactful to you.

The human thing

Objective:

This assignment invites you to reflect on how the study of Greek mythology has enhanced your understanding of the human condition, what the Greeks called to anthropinon (literally, “the human thing”). You will consider the ways in which Greek myths about the gods encountered over the course explore universal themes, human emotions, and the complexities of life, and how these ancient stories continue to resonate with us today.

Assignment Instructions:

In an essay of about 1000 words, reflect on your experience learning about Greek mythology throughout this course, focusing on at least a pair of myths that were particularly striking or impactful to you.

As with all previous assignments, your essay should take the form of an argument, grounded in a central thesis and supported by claims backed up by references to relevant data/texts. As you reflect on your learning in the course and begin to craft your argument, think about how you would address the following points:

  1. Identify at least two myths that particularly resonated with you in terms of their exploration of the human condition. Briefly summarize these myths and explain why they stood out to you.
  2. Discuss the universal themes present in these myths (e.g., love, loss, fate, ambition, hubris, mortality), citing where possible explicit references to key texts or ancient artefacts. How do these themes reflect the struggles, desires, and experiences common to all humans?
  3. Reflect on the insights you’ve gained about human nature and society through the study of these myths. How have these stories helped you to better empathize with other humans and to better understand concepts such as mortality, morality, identity, or the complexities of human emotions?
  4. Consider whether the myths have changed your perspective on certain aspects of life, such as the inevitability of suffering, the pursuit of happiness, or the quest for meaning.
  5. Analyze how the themes and lessons from Greek mythology are still relevant to us in modernity. Can you think of modern examples (in literature, film, current events, or personal experiences) where these ancient insights are reflected and/or could productively be brought to bear?
  6. In answering the previous questions, reflect on why you think these myths have endured for so long. What is it about the stories that the Greeks and Romans told that continues to speak to the human experience across different eras and cultures?

Submission Guidelines:

  • Format: Your reflection should be double-spaced, in 12-point Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins.
  • Citations: In referencing, please use MLA or APA citation style.
