Your choice of a phenomenological approach could be a very effective way to understand the help-seeking behaviors of Hispanics. The research question needs to be developed. You may need to think first about who your participants will be. Are they people who have come to the church for spiritual help to address what may be a psychiatric disorder? Is your interest in the general population of church goers? Will participants also include people using mental health services? Your question can be brief and direct. For example, “could you tell me about your thoughts, feelings, and ideas about mental illness?” Another could be, “please tell what the best source for help with emotional pain or poor mental health is and why? Methodology Feedback: A strength that those who use an interpretative phenomenological method is that the researchers prior knowledge of the phenomenon being studied. This means your experiences that may similar to those of the people you speak with or knowledge you have about the phenomenon is viewed as an important consideration in the interview process and analysis of data. Would any of the participants have concerns that participating in the study might impact their standing in the church? Since the focus is on mental health and some participants may see a potential risk to their standing in the church by sharing their views of church leaders and other congregants. Your statements about the integrity of the data and putting safeguards in place can go a long way towards calming concerns.
