Assignment: Remix and RemediateLinks to an external site. your Academic Essay into a MultimodalLinks to an external site.Composition for a New Audience
Along with the multimodal composition, students will submit:
-
- an audience analysis, clearly describing the intended audience(s) for the composition, and
- a statement of purpose, clearly identifying the purpose of the composition, and briefly explaining the strategies that have been employed to accomplish that purpose.
Modality: Something more/other than an “academic paper or essay.” The goal will be multimodality, thus students should demonstrate the effective use of more than one communication mode.
Length: Varies by project. Rather than a particular length, other measurements of substance will be discussed and applied.
- The guideline is: equivalent to a 3-5 page essay.
- Each student will have the opportunity to review and confirm this with Dr. Huisman to ensure transparency in this regard, prior to final submission of work.
Expectations:
- The composition will be multimodal
- Creativity will be celebrated
- The composition will demonstrate audience awareness.
- The Essay will demonstrate that the author has researched sufficiently to become an expert—albeit a novice one—on the topic and issues discussed in the Essay.
- The main evidence here will be the ability to communicate complex ideas to a particular non-academic audience.
- The Essay will demonstrate a clear awareness of purpose, including claims that are effectively supported with reasons and evidence.
- Claims can only be supported effectively when they are situated within the context of multiple possible positions on the issue.
- The Essay will demonstrate the ability to use source ideas effectively, with clarity and proper attribution of ideas.
- In this composition, students will most likely NOT use MLA or APA style, so awareness of what is appropriate to the genre and modality will be important.
- The basic requirement: give credit where credit is due—how you do that is less important this time around.
- The Essay will be carefully crafted, with appropriate* tone, diction, style, and mechanics.
- *Appropriate for the genre and modality—which may look very different from what is appropriate in an academic essay.
