Discussion Thread: Analysis of Hippocampus Magazine and my Proposal:
Hippocampus Magazine is an online publication dedicated to creative nonfiction. They are accepting submissions until November 30th (Hippocampus Magazine). The magazines’ focus is to entertain, educate, and engage both the readers and the writers through memoir excerpts, personal essays, reviews, interviews, and craft articles (Hippocampus Magazine). The magazine features content from new and already established authors. Their audience consists of those who enjoy real, heartfelt, and honest experiences. The diversity in their audience includes those wanting to make their writing better and having conversations about creative nonfiction (Hippocampus Magazine). They value those complexities of life stories that help establish empathy and understanding. However, they have some feelings when it comes to overly religious works.
When submitting, it is a clever idea to make sure to focus on universal ideas and stick to empathetic stories. A publication that they have published was from the World magazine, which is a Biblical coverage of global, national, and cultural current events from a Christian perspective (World Magazine).
My essay aligns with Hippocampus Magazine because it offers authentic, heartfelt story. It prompts readers to reflect on their lives and develop empathy for those experiencing suffering. To improve my chances of publication, I will make several key revisions. First, I will ensure my message is clear and compelling by enhancing my thesis and making sure I provide support.
Additionally, I will make sure my essay is tailored to the magazine’s diverse readers. Adjusting my langiage and style for both new and old readers. I will also make sure that my transitions are smoother.

Hello Everyone,
- The publication’s focus/purpose, target audience, and style/content limits
The focus and purpose of the Faith & Fitness magazine is to help individuals better their health & fitness while simultaneously having that connection of spiritual growth through God. For the target audience, “Faith & Fitness magazine is for professionals, families, seniors, students and many other individuals from the inner city to urban, to rural who have an interest in health and fitness” (Lifestyle media group). This magazine’s content seeks to link faith to a lifestyle of health and fitness. Its writing style consists of personal narratives concerning Christianity, health, and fitness topics written less formally than other Christian magazines like Christianity Today. This magazine uses plain communication which as Dunham mentions “means information you can find, understand and use quickly” (33).
- The publication’s likelihood to publish articles written from a Christian worldview. You may need to provide examples of recent topics they have published.
The articles published in Faith & Fitness magazine are articles to be intertwined with faith-building principles. One recently published health article mentions how Chief Ashely Keyes works for C.H.O.I.C.E., an organization that helps reduce obesity levels in children by teaching them to eat and prepare healthy meals. C.H.O.I.C.E. provides an easy meal-prepared model of eating for children (Bloom 2024). All this healthy eating aligns with scripture, “What things are good, pure, wholesome- ‘ God-given,’ we can and should think and focus on these things” (Philippians 4:8; Bloom 2024). Another article by Michael Witting concerns outdoor workouts, especially when the gym is unavailable (2024). Witting shows how to do outdoor workouts with resistance bands that are easy to pack and carry (Wittig 2024). He highlights how you are prone to fewer distractions while doing exercises outdoors and can better connect with God (Wittig 2024). He also mentions how our bodies are a gift given by God and that we should care for them to serve Him better in the areas we are called (Wittig 2024). In Chris Timm’s article titled, “Living with Perseverance,” he tells how he was a cross-country runner, and his team had been victorious in acquiring the championship (Timm 2024). He describes how running can be challenging when there are alterations in the “elevation and terrain” and the weather, which all require perseverance to run with (Timm 2024). He quotes Hebrews 12:11 “And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Timm 2024). He explains that just like running a planned route our lives are planned by God’s purpose and with perseverance we can accomplish that plan (Timm 2024).
- Your Writing Creative Nonfiction Essay Assignment’s alignment with those features of the publication.
I believe my essay aligns well with this essay’s intersections of health and fitness and Christianity topics because I am incorporating a common health issue of obesity. I am including both health principles such as eating God-made foods and consuming natural products like Almased; I also have fitness recommendations such as strength training exercises and walking and jogging. I am also incorporating God into our health activities: such as taking care of our body, God’s temple, listening to worship music while working out, repeating positive declarations, quoting scriptures of health and wellness, and incorporating faith through the visualization technique pictures of me being fit and healthy.
Revisions that may be necessary to your proposal or essay to seek publication in that source.
The revisions I may need to make to address the Faith & Fitness magazine in my proposal essay is to change my proposal-directed audience from those of the CT magazine. I may need to include more scriptures on health and healing and make it even more God-centered. This magazine likes to include many pictures and videos in their articles, so I will have to add images. Dunham mentions, “Photos…should illustrate the major elements, particularly those that are hard to visualize from a verbal description alone” (Dunham 24). I may wish to incorporate photos to include more strength training exercise recommendations.
