The framework previously built upon Meta-Leadership effectiveness regarding COVID-19 cybersecurity practices was a good starting point. I’m afraid I have to disagree with every decision that those leaders made unquestioningly, but I believe that the framework to make those tough decisions was there. There is no way that the events that occurred due to COVID-29 could have been predicted to unravel how they did. So, planning every little detail would not have made a difference as the leaders would have to adjust anyway. In Meta-Leadership, you have to be able to rely on the experts in the perspective fields that are around you. This is the case because you must make tough decisions sometimes, which can be im[impossible if you need the most up-to-date, accurate information. Cybersecurity means that if the healthcare industry can’t have in-person operations due to a health crisis, that communication will now have to be in cyberspace. That comes with potential downfalls. The most important is maintaining the doctor-patient privacy enjoyed in the medical industry. If that is lost, then there is no confidence in whether a patient can trust that the healthcare given to them is personal or that the entire world knows what is happening. That also includes personal information that could cause financial risks.

Just like any transaction, there has to be integrity with these transmissions. If unauthorized parties can intercept this information, then there will be hesitation in making more of those transmissions. I also want to mention the logistical parts of the medical industry. There are tons of supplies that have to be moved from one place to another. This includes medicine, beds, machines, and more. Even though this information is not necessarily of high value to the average person, some bad actors would love to get their hands on this information. All of this must be in the minds of the leaders making the big decisions. And that had some of this information when the pandemic happened. As I stated earlier, they were not perfect in every decision. But to say that the barebones framework wasn’t there wouldn’t be completely accurate in my perspective. They should be able to take those lessons and build upon their already-established framework. The network updates, the hardening of those data infrastructures, the policies to keep that information easily accessible to those authorized users, and the denial of those who should not have that information should be updated. The least privileged roles should be reviewed as well to make sure that people who had access to this information actually needed it and not just anyone who requested it. Once these policies are reviewed, it would be in the best interests of everyone involved that it be shared across all industries to renew the standard of how this information is transmitted and stored. That way, the leaders will avoid repeating the same mistakes as before. There were lives at stake during this event. Failure to adapt when the information is available is not an excuse that should be tolerated.

Class,

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges for healthcare leaders, making effective leadership more crucial than ever. The meta-leadership framework provides a valuable tool for executives, offering concepts and tools to help them navigate the complexities of the crisis. Meta-leadership promotes self-awareness and emotional grounding, recognizing the importance of understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses. It also emphasizes the need for leaders to have situational awareness. Ellis states: “McNulty explained that he and Marcus are committed to help executives recognize their range of options and then to make choices most in line with their leadership objectives. ‘Rarely have we encountered someone who wants to be the ‘not so great’ leader,’ he said. ‘They micro-manage out of fear. Or they are seen as disengaged because they aren’t self-aware enough to perceive the needs of followers for their presence. It is much more often lack of knowledge than malign intent.” The dimensions of meta-leadership framework help define pathways to better choices. The meta-leadership tool kit makes it possible to systematically develop proficiency and with that, to put best practices into place (Ellis, 2020).” Also, during times of crisis, meta-leadership encourages leaders to be curious, asking hard questions, and make decisions based on a deep understanding of the situation. The program focuses on driving leaders to become better and pushing them to get things done effectively. Ultimately, meta-leadership aims to guide leaders in making choices aligned with their leadership objectives. The pandemic highlighted the limitations inherent in relying solely on a single leader’s perspective or knowledge domain. Entrusting leadership to a sole individual carries a heightened risk of encountering issues. In the cyber realm, this is called a single point of failure and I see it all the time. People tend to do this for job security, but having only one leader is very dangerous especially if they fall ill or their leadership calls are not working. Thus, adopting a leadership approach like the meta-leadership equips any team to have multiple leaders and be able to make important decisions on the fly.

Additionally, this leadership approach can really benefit in the realm of cybersecurity. In the cyber world, a distributed leadership model that leverages a diverse set of skills and perspectives is crucial. Cybersecurity challenges are so different and specific that it requires a comprehensive understanding of different types and avenues of technology and risk management. Cyber threats require numerous leaders with strong technical understanding. Adapting the meta-leadership in the cyber realm would be greatly beneficial. I agree with having a meta-leadership type style in the cyber world because having one sole leader in such an ever-changing environment would cause some crucial issues. I think cyber is a team effort and when we look at some of the strongest blue and red teams in cyber, they are a team effort, there’s always a point where someone steps up to be a leader in their expertise. By embracing a leadership style that distributes responsibilities and encourages collaboration, organizations can build a more robust and adaptive cybersecurity posture. This approach is a great way for cyber teams to work.
