Managing GERD which is (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is a very effective approach for many people. By doing so people have to avoid triggering foods such as spicy foods, fatty foods, citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, peppermint, carbonated drinks, alcohol and caffeinated beverages. Unhealthy food options as with most other diseases are often the cause and choosing healthier food options can always help or decrease the chance of you experiencing GERD. Staying hydrated and incorporating alkaline foods such as leafy greens, melons, and bananas into your diet that can help neutralize stomach acid can help with the management or prevention of GERD (Jones, 2022). Low fat food options as well as avoiding eating late at night gives your stomach time to empty and reduces the chance of nighttime reflux. And lastly eating smaller more frequent meals rather than larger meals and slowly chewing your food well can aid digestion and reduce the likelihood of GERD (Jones, 2022) .
I personally do believe that most people would rather rely on medication to treat GERD rather than change their eating habits because lets face it, people are addicted to food, especially the foods that are no good for you. The unhealthy food option often taste way better than the healthier options and therefore people would rather be happy now and pay later. Another reason people may choose the medicine option to treat GERD rather than dietary changes is because of the convenience of the medication providing immediate relief, whereas dietary changes may be effective over time.
To conclude ultimately, the choice between dietary management and medication often depends on personal preferences, lifestyle, and how well each approach works for an individual’s specific symptoms. Many find a combination of both dietary adjustments and medications to be the most effective strategy for managing GERD.
